Tactical EMS

Events such as school shootings, the WTO demonstrations, and the increased threat of terrorist violence remind us of the need to integrate Emergency Medical Services with Law Enforcement Tactical Operations. Our Tactical EMS course will give you the skills and knowledge required to successfully operate in this highly specialized environment.

Graduates of the Tactical EMS (TEMS) course will be able to integrate the following skills into their agencies standard operations: assess, plan, and provide for preventive medicine needs in sustained operations; recognize and treat unique wounding patterns resulting from deliberate interpersonal aggression; perform appropriate medical care skills in hostile and austere conditions; develop and apply injury control strategies; access and analyze medical intelligence and conduct a medical threat assessment; apply medical treatment principals unique to the tactical environment.

Curriculum:

Medical aspects of extended operations
Medical threat assessment and medical intelligence
Care under fire
"Officer Down" rescue and extrication; aeromedical evacuation
Wound ballistics, weapons and their effects
Toxic hazards: identification, risks and management
Medicine across the barricade
Sensory deprived patient assessment
Clinical forensic medicine/evidence preservation

Prerequisites:

Medical certification at the First Responder level or higher

Required Equipment:

Expendable clothing that may be permanently stained with fake blood. Holster gear and an inert handgun are useful. (We have some models of inert guns available.) Expendable running shorts/sports bra to wear under clothing when role playing the casualty.
