InSights Instructors

Our professional instructors come from highly specialized and thorough backgrounds in Law Enforcement, Military Special Operations, and the Private Sector. They have all received extensive instructor development training from our own master trainer, Greg Hamilton, in addition to high level training from numerous national academies. Greg (and John Holschen) are the only two-time winners in the history of the National Tactical Invitational and have been recognized as "Master Tacticians" and "Master Trainers" by the American Tactical Shooting Association. Our staff's operational experience and teaching expertise combine to insure you a positive learning experience while increasing your personal security awareness and skills.

InSights Staff

Greg M. Hamilton, Chief Instructor

Greg Hamilton is the Founder and Chief Instructor for InSights. He is internationally recognized as one of the best firearms and tactics instructors in the world. He is a veteran of the US Army Rangers and Special Forces, and is certified by the Army as a Close Quarters Combat Instructor and Anti-Terrorism Instructor. He is certified by the National Law Enforcement Training Center as a Handgun Retention Instructor, and by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) as a Firearms Instructor.

Greg has been named a "Master Instructor" and "Master Tactician" by the American Tactical Shooters Association. He has attended and/or been an instructor at Gunsite Training Center, Mid-South Institute of Self-Defense Shooting, Defense Training International, American Pistol Institute, Lethal Force Institute, Chapman Academy, National Law Enforcement Training Center, H&K's International Training Division, ITC/Thunder Ranch, and Yavapai Firearms Academy.

Greg is a two-time National Champion and has placed in the top five at the
National Tactical Invitational six years in a row. More importantly, he has trained more than half a dozen people to accomplish similar results. Greg has made InSights courses nationally known for their incredible attention to detail and for the level of performance of their graduating students.

John Holschen

John Holschen is a frequent guest instructor with InSights. John served for over 20 years in the Special Operations and Intelligence branches of the U.S. Army. He is a former US Army Special Forces Weapons Sergeant and Special Forces Medic. John taught at the JFK Special Warfare School and was the Senior Hand to Hand Combat Instructor/Master Instructor for 1st Special Forces Group.

His recent experience includes tours in the Middle East as a protective security specialist and a site security manager of U.S. government facilities. He is a graduate of multiple Military Close Quarters Combat courses, is certified as an instructor by the US Army and as a Firearms Instructor by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.

John has over 30 years of Martial Arts experience and is an instructor in Daito Ryu Aiki Budo, Shorin Ken Karate Do, and Shotokan Karate. He is a two-time winner of the National Tactical Invitational and has placed among the top 5 practitioners each year that he has participated (9 times.) John has authored a number of analytical works discussing the training and tactics of international terrorists.

Stephanie Kerns

Stephanie Kerns is Co-Owner of InSights and has been an InSights handgun instructor since 1996. She is certified by the WSCJTC as a Firearms Instructor, Utah Dept of Public Safety as a Concealed Firearms Instructor and the NRA in Home Firearms Safety, Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer. Stephanie is also a certified Rape Prevention Instructor with the American Women's Self Defense Association. She has graduated from  multiple InSights and Thunder Ranch courses. Stephanie is the Lead Instructor for InSights Women's courses and has been a Adjunct Instructor for Thunder Ranch.

Keven Kerkam

Keven Kerkam has been with InSights from the beginning, and is a graduate of all their firearm and tactical courses. He is certified by the WSCJTC as a Firearms Instructor. He has graduated from multiple courses from Gunsite, DTI, International Training Consultants, LFI, Yavapai Firearms Academy, and Jim Cirrilo's Shooting Course. Keven is an instructor for Handgun, Rifle, and Shotgun, and a coach for Tactics.

Mike Shertz M.D.

Mike Shertz, MD has attended all InSights courses and multiple courses from DTI, Gunsite. He is a qualified Special Forces Medic and is certified by the US Army as a Combatives Instructor. He is a member of the International Wound Ballistics Association and the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers. Mike has finished in fifth place or higher in nearly every NTI since 1997.

Mike is an instructor for Handgun, Rifle, Unarmed, Knife, and Tactical Emergency Medicine. He is a coach for Shotgun, Tactics, Handgun Retention, and Close Quarters. Mike serves as the Chief Medical Officer and leads a team of Tactical Medics for the Washington County, Oregon, SWAT team.

Dave Handa

Dave Handa is an instructor for Basic Handgun and Glock Maintenance and a coach for Handgun, Rifle, and Tactics. He is certified by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission as a Firearms Instructor, NRA pistol instructor and is a factory certified Glock Armorer. He has graduated from multiple courses at InSights, Gunsite, DTI, LFI and International Training Inc.

John Fogh

John Fogh has been with InSights since 1996 and is a primary instructor for Unarmed Self Defense, Defensive Folding Knife, and Handgun Retention and Disarming. John holds a Black Belt in Judo and has graduated from multiple InSights handgun, longarm, combatives and tactics courses. John is currently working internationally as a military analyst and trainer.

Tracy Roberts

Tracy Roberts is an instructor for InSights Basic and General Defensive Handgun courses and is a coach for higher level handgun, shotgun, rifle, and all combatives courses.  He is certified as a firearms instructor by the WSCJTC and worked as a climbing guide on Mt. Rainier for over 20 years. Tracy has completed courses with Gunsite, DTI, and LFI, trains in various martial arts, and served as an Infantry Platoon Leader in Vietnam


Benjamin Olmsted

Benjamin Olmstead is retired patrolman with a Police Department in Washington, a member of the SWAT team, and a certified Defensive Tactics Instructor. He is a former Military Police Officer and Security Force Company Platoon Sergeant with the USMC. Benjamin is a graduate of the USMC Close Quarter Battle school, Assault Breacher school, and Designated Marksman school. He is also a graduate of the US Army Special Response Team school, Physical Security course, and the L.A.S.O. SWAT school. Ben has taken courses at InSights, MISS, and the Bill Rogers School. He is a firearms, tactics, and SWAT instructor for InSights.

Nick Collins

Nick is an instructor for our handgun, rifle, and combatives courses. He has served as an Infantryman for more than 15 years in the US Army with over 8 years as a Sniper, Sniper Team Leader, and Sniper Squad Leader. He has served two combat tours in Iraq where he led dismounted patrols, conducted sniper operations, served on a personal security detail, performed convoy escort missions, and was a quick reaction force squad leader for Task Force Baghdad.
Nick has over 10 years instructor experience teaching military pre-deployment, firearms, and combatives classes. His medical back round includes certifications as an Emergency Medical Technician, Wilderness EMT, Coast Guard Medical Person in Charge, CPR for Professional Rescuer, Army Combat Lifesaver, and courses in Tactical First Aid.
Nick is an experienced security driver and has trained in surveillance detection, evasive and protective driving, off road driving and recovery, and personal security detail driving at BSR, International Training Inc., and Tactical Explosive Entry School.

Mike Warsocki

Mike Warsocki is a retired Army officer who served over 23 years on active duty. Mike began his affiliation with InSights in 1996, and in 1998 began working with the Insights staff to bring the Insights system to the active military.  Mike became a primary Insights instructor in 2004.  He is a graduate of most of the Insights classes, and has trained with numerous others to include John Farnham, Pat Rogers, and Louis Awerbuck, to name a few.  Mike is an NRA certified Law Enforcement instructor in Handgun, Shotgun and Patrol Rifle. He has been a regular invitee to the National Tactical Invitational (NTI).  In 2006 Mike was recognized as one of the top five practitioners at the NTI.  He has been a guest lecturer at the NTI, the Polite Society Training Conference in Memphis, and TREXPO East in Northern Virginia. After retiring to the Northern Virginia area in 2005, Mike is now the primary instructor for GDH, Intermediate Defensive HG, USD and DK from Virginia to New York.  He is also an assistant instructor for many of InSights' higher level handgun, rifle and tactics courses.

Jeff Mau

Jeff Mau currently works as a patrol officer for a municipal police department. In addition to his primary assignment as a patrol officer, Jeff holds collateral duties as a member of a multi-agency SWAT team and as a CJTC certified Defensive Tactics Instructor. Jeff is an instructor for General Defensive Handgun and Basic Handgun. Additionally, he is a coach for all other firearms, combatives, and tactics courses. He is a factory certified Glock Armorer. In addition to Insights, Jeff has taken courses from EAG Tactical, Trident Concepts, International Tactical Training Seminars, and HSS International.

Kristina Kelly

Kristina Kelley has taught for InSights since 2009. She is the lead instructor for our women's firearms courses and is also a primary instructor for Concealed  Firearms Permit Class for Utah  and Basic Handgun Safety and Responsibility. Kristina is a certified firearms instructor with the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, a certified NRA instructor, and a certified rape prevention instructor (American Women's Self Defense Association.) While away from InSights she is an avid distance runner and has run dozens of marathons.

Kevin Pine

Kevin has experience as an executive protection detail member, and has been an executive protection instructor for the Dept. of State. He is a Crisis Response Team instructor, Specializing in Anti-Terrorism and counter sniper operations. Kevin also has over twenty years in medicine as a Medic with eleven years as a supervisor of over eighty personnel. Kevin's experience specializes in Counter Terrorism, Demolitions/Breaching and SWAT Tactics, Experienced in VIP protection, Surveillance, and Clandestine Operations. He has also specialized in running large clinics and small aid stations, and has served as the Paramedic in charge of clinic operations. While deployed, Kevin gained experience providing medical care for Special Forces Units. Kevin is a Health Care Assistant with ABCDEF ratings.

Gina Rappaport

Gina Rappaport is an instructor for Basic Handgun, as well as a coach for other InSights firearms classes. She has trained with InSights since 1995, and has been a WSCJTC certified firearms instructor since 1994. Gina is also a graduate of courses at other nationally recognized firearms schools,including Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, and the Lethal Force Institute.

Alan Hines

Alan Hines is an instructor for Basic Handgun, Basic Long Gun, Utah CFP, Glock Maintenance, and a coach for various InSights classes. He has completed InSights firearms, combatives, and tactics curriculum, and has been a practitioner at the National Tactical Invitational. He is certified by the WSCJTC as a Firearms Instructor, by the NRA as a Pistol Instructor, by Glock as an Armorer, and by Utah as a Concealed Firearms Permit Instructor. Alan is also a  technical editor and assists InSights with their print materials.

David Sharp

David Sharp has been training with InSights since 2003, is a firearms instructor with WSCJTC and NRA instructor certifications, and is also an experienced coach for our tactics, combatives, and law enforcement courses.  David's foundation comes from his previous 7 years as a patrol officer for a large metropolitan police department, is a graduate of InSights' Tactical Handgun Instructor, Active Shooter Response Instructor, and Dynamic Clearing law enforcement schools, and has successfully trained in nearly every InSights private sector course.  David's also a former certified EMT and continuing graduate of InSights' Tactical EMS curricula.  Adding to his leadership and trainer expertise, outside of InSights David is a PMP certified project manager who leads implementations of enterprise IT, AV and UC strategy projects.

Jamin Kortegard

Jamin is a primary instructor for Basic Handgun, an assistant instructor for Unarmed Self Defense and Defensive Folding Knife, and a coach for other InSights private sector courses. Jamin is certified as a Firearms Instructor by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commision and as a Pistol Instructor by the National Rifle Association. He is a graduate of all InSights private sector combatives and firearms courses, and most tactics courses. Away from InSights, Jamin is a technology professional.

David Roberts

David Roberts has been studying martial arts since 1978, training in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Ben Der Wing Chun, Al Dacascos Won Hop Kuen Do, Danzan Ryu Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. The last 8 years have been spent training in Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Thai/Cambodian Boxing, and being certified as an instructor in the World War II system of American Combatives under John Kary. He has attended all of the InSights handgun courses and has been formally trained in the Applegate method of Point Shooting.

Don P. Redl, Jr.

Don is the Founder, Director of Executive Protection and Training Operations as well as a Senior Investigator for The Boca Group & Associates, Inc. He has conducted both low profile and high risk corporate Executive Protection and Investigative Operations throughout the United States. Don is recognized as an instructor by the National Rifle Association's Law Enforcement Activities Training Division, The American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, Simunition, Inc., Taser International, The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as a Firearms and General Topics Instructor, and The Florida State Division of Licensing as a Firearms Instructor. Don has been retained and testified in NY State Supreme Court as an Expert Witness as well as being featured numerous times on Television and in Print Media as an Expert in the areas of personal defense issues.

Don has been named a "Tactician" from the American Tactical Shooting Association, the sponsor of the National Tactical Invitational where he has consistently been recognized as one of the top 5 participants for over 7 years, ultimately being named the "shotist" in 1999 making him a "National Champion". Don has personally trained numerous Law Enforcement, and Corporate Security professionals in Executive Protection, Firearms and Scenario Based Force on Force Training.

Jae Gillentine

Jae Gillentine has been involved with Insights since 2003 and is a graduate of many InSights handgun courses. In addition to being the InSights Webmaster, Jae has also completed most of the combatives, tactics, and long gun courses. He has been trained exclusively at Insights by Greg and other senior instructors and is a coach for many of the combatives and handgun courses.
